MTN Ghana and Vodafone Ghana are pleased to report substantial progress in their efforts to establish a national roaming service in Ghana. MTN Ghana and Vodafone Ghana have formed a strategic agreement to pilot national roaming in the Volta Region as a first step toward a bigger nationwide partnership. During the pilot phase of this partnership, Vodafone Ghana will use MTN's network infrastructure to expand its network coverage.
MTN and Vodafone have reached an agreement on national roaming.
In Ghana, national roaming is being implemented to promote universal access and expedite digitalization in accordance with the country's digital economy goals. This pilot is the first stage in the government's larger intention to establish a full national roaming policy encompassing all operators in the country.
"The deployment of nationwide roaming will help Vodafone Ghana customers to stay connected in places outside our present locations of coverage," Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Vodafone Ghana, said in a statement. This is especially essential for rural areas, as national roaming always provides a wider range of network providers. We feel that the collaboration in the Volta Region is a positive step forward, and we look forward to expanding the national roaming service beyond the Volta Region in the future, working with the government, the regulator, and MTN Ghana."
"This deal is a watershed moment for the industry and aligns with our Ambition 2025 strategic objective of "leading digital solutions for Africa's progress," stated Selorm Adadevoh, CEO of MTN Ghana.
"MTN supports the government's National Roaming ambitions wholeheartedly. We recognize that national roaming will expand network coverage for Ghanaians across the country and help the country's telecommunications industry flourish. Our engineers have worked diligently to test and find answers to the numerous issues that have arisen along the way, and we are looking forward to the future of our cooperation with Vodafone Ghana." Selorm continued.
The results of the trial will be crucial in the development of the next phase of the cooperation, which will involve more complex technological configurations for nationwide roaming on either network in the coming months. In due course, we would update the market.
We'd like to thank the National Communications Authority (NCA) for their help and participation throughout the process, as well as their consent to move forward with this trial. We also applaud the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization for establishing the policy framework necessary to facilitate such a partnership at this juncture in Ghana's telecommunications growth. We are convinced that this is only one of many forward-thinking regulations that will be implemented in the future to ensure the industry's existence.
