Following the establishment of national holidays on Monday, May 2 and Tuesday, May 3, workers in Ghana will have a long weekend.
Monday and Tuesday of the next week Holidays declared by the government
The Interior Ministry announced in two separate releases that this year's May Day, also known as Worker's Day, will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2022. Because the holiday occurs on a weekend, it will be observed as a public holiday on Monday, May 2, 2022.
"In light of the fact that the 1st of May 2022 falls on a Sunday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has announced Monday, 2nd May 2022, as an additional Public Holiday and shall be recognized as such throughout the country," according to the Ministry's statement.
According to the Ministry, the May 3 holiday is to commemorate the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration, which is traditionally held by Muslims in Ghana after the Ramadan fast.
"The public is hereby advised that Eid-ul-Fitr, which falls on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be commemorated as such throughout the country," the ministry stated in a statement.
This practically means that employees in Ghana will begin reporting to work on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.
